The Kesavananda Bharati case (1973) is a landmark Supreme Court of India decision establishing that Parliament cannot alter the Constitution’s “basic structure.” Heard by the largest-ever 13-judge bench, it ruled 7-6 that while Parliament can amend any part of the Constitution under Article 368, such amendments cannot destroy its core principle.
